Which screw ... the short one with the large diameter head ... the long 
one with the small diameter head?

Both are M5-0.5, but are special lengths and have special head diameters.

You can fix the internal threads with an M3-0.5 tap.

You might even be able to restore the external threads with an M3-0.5 die.

You can probably substitute an equivalent metric machine screw obtained 
from your local Ace Hardware store.
