My 520c and iMac G4 will not interface via Appletalk anymore. I get an error message when I connect the two using an ethernet crossover cable that says "This file server uses an incompatible version of the AFP protocol. You cannot connect to it."

I was able to use Appletalk to connect the two when I was running 10.2.8, but now that I'm on 10.4.1, I can't seem to make it happen.

You need to connect via IP address, Appletalk was dropped in 10.4. You'll need (iirc) Appleshare client 3.7 or better on the 520. This means you have to initiate the connection from the 520c and know the IP address of the iMac.

You can get Shareway IP from Open Door networks, but that's expensive. This is what Apple bundled with OS 9 to get IP file sharing. <http://www.opendoor.com/shareway/>
