Hi again,
Yes, I did phrase my question rather badly. No, I don't want to
overclock, and the info about system heap and RAM sounds like it might be
applicable in my case. What I really want to know is, will all this
constant much heavier usage than it normally gets actually DAMAGE my
5300c?
Two comments:
Mechanical moving parts are subject to wear, which usually is
influenced by usage. Your hard drive, any floppy drives, any CD
drives, keyboard, trackpad, etc. are among this class of devices. They
are also built to withstand a lot of use. Electronics are not
influenced by operation within their voltage and current/power ratings
(except for flash devices, which actually operate by driven temproarily
outside their normal ratings for very short periods of time. That's why
they have special ratings for, e. g., 1,000,000 write operations).
Also, any lubricants are subject to the effects of time and oxygen
exposure. The trackpad and keys are not normally lubricated, so this
shouldn't be an issue. They aren't likely to degrade just by sitting
for a long time. The various drives are going to be suspect if they've
sat for a while without use, and may have had lubricants move out from
under long-sittng bearings, for instance. This will be a risk for
restarting heavy use after several years of little or no use.
Now, :-) all that was to justify my almost worthless opinion that your
return to heavy use is not likely to have much effect on anything but
the keyboard and trackpad. The mechanical stuff will crap out over time
under even minimal use, and the keyboard/trackpad will likely show you
visually what condition they are in.
Watch your KB/TP, back up your information, and use your 5300C as much
as you want. :-).
