Ok. I've got a 520c with the AAUI ethernet adapter, and I have a Comcast cable modem. Pardon my ignorance, but I'm used to plug-and-play with my iMac.

I've hooked up my 520c to the cable modem, set TCP/IP to ethernet, and get IP by DHCP server, and then... nothing. I get an error message if I try to go to any web site. How do I get this thing to connect to the internet? I just have no clue at all. If someone could give me a step-by-step I'd appreciate it.

Sounds like two issues:

a) Your cable modem was already hooked up to your iMac, so it "knows" your iMac's MAC (ethernet) address. Since you're only authorized to talk to Comcast with one computer at a time, the modem won't talk to your PB until it is reset properly.

b) While the modem was deciding to not talk to your PB, your PB assigned itself a temporary DHCP Lease (with a 169.154.x.x IP address). Now it's going to sit there until it times out, before retrying. :\

Reset things this way:

Shut down your PB.

Power-cycle the cable modem. Do this by unplugging it, NOT by using its power switch! Leave it unplugged for at least 30 seconds to a minute. This is to make sure it "forgets" its IP lease, the iMac's MAC address, and other parameters.

After plugging the cable modem back in, WAIT for it to fully synchronize with the cable system (all lights solid green).

Boot your PB.

- Dan.
