Ok. I've got a 520c with the AAUI ethernet adapter, and I have a
Comcast cable modem. Pardon my ignorance, but I'm used to plug-and-
play with my iMac.
I've hooked up my 520c to the cable modem, set TCP/IP to ethernet,
and get IP by DHCP server, and then... nothing. I get an error
message if I try to go to any web site. How do I get this thing to
connect to the internet? I just have no clue at all. If someone
could give me a step-by-step I'd appreciate it.
What OS and what TCP/IP extensions are you using? If you're using
Open Transport, go get the free OTTool from Neon Software at <ftp://
ftp.neon.com/pub/goodies>
It's an invaluable tcp/ip troubleshooting tool for the classic OS.
See what IP address you have, I'll bet it's a self-assigned one i the
169.x.x.x range, which means it isn't properly talking to the router.
Is that Comcast modem normally connected to another system? If so,
you need to disconnect the first system, reset the modem (maybe a
power cycle, maybe pressing a button, it depends on the modem.) ,
then connect the 520 before the modem will give an IP address.
If you're routinely going to use more than one system with this
modem, get a cable router, then reset the cable modem to recognize
the router, and everything you plug into the cable router will get an
ip address and be able to surf. Like this: <http://tinyurl.com/
acj5g>. If you live in a metro area, Best Buy, Staple's, Office
Depot, Compusa, Fry's and the like all carry these things and often
have loss leader deals on them.
If you ARE using MacTCP, and the Appletalk trick Howard mentions
doesn't work, I'd suggest installing Open Transport: <http://
tinyurl.com/84nsv> (Apple's older software downloads.) OT was much
more reliable. MacTCP may not work with the DHCP server in the modem.
