I've got this before too.
In this case OS 7.5.3 would be a better idea because of the modem
support.
I suspect that the drivers or else the modem is not supported by OS 8.
Try the GV website.
I am having a problem with the internal modem in my PowerBook 520. I
can't get it to connect. It just says there was an error, and it
doesn't even try to dial. Any help? I have OS 8.
