Most likely, you just have a cabling issue.  If you are trying to connect
your machine directly to the ethernet port on the base station, you need to
use a "crossover" cable.  This specially wired cable swaps the transmit and
receive pairs of wires, and allows 2 devices to talk to each other directly.
