I haven't personally verified this, but I've heard that the *machine*
can do it, but *MacOS* won't see the slave. It supposedly does work
with LinuxPPC.

I recently put a PowerLogix 400Mhz G3 in mine. Easy installation
(only slightly harder than installing RAM), works perfectly so far,
although I haven't had time to properly abuse it yet... ;) However,
new G3 upgrades are $200-300 (not sure about used, maybe $100-200?).

If you want a smaller speed increase for a much smaller price,
upgrade the L2 cache. I did that a few years ago; it took Virtual PC
from impossibly slow to slow-but-usable, but it's not G3 speed. (I
might sell mine if I can verify that 1) it doesn't do any good now
that I have a G3 and 2) I can't put it in my c500.) For more
information, and a motherboard diagram if you want to find the L2
slot and see if there's anything in it already (it's very well buried
under other stuff):

Unfortunately, I don't see any new ones for sale currently, although
eBay has a few 256Ks for about $10. There's also a couple cache
threads on this list right now...they may or may not be discussing
the right part for a PowerBase, but maybe someone else knows of a
source.
