First of all, thanks for the effort, Michael. According to the Dutch
chipmunks, the newest DIMMs I have appear to be FPM, not EDO, so I'm sure
that's the main problem.

Yes, but my good 32s have chips on both sides (double banked?) and the PB
needs single banked memory in slot 1. (macgurus) Curiously, both of my 16s
have chips in both sides, and it WILL boot with them in slot 1. All of my
8s were single sided.

Check. But the System Profiler says "Logic board 8mb, DIMM2 16MB," even
though it reports 32MB total.

Check.
So the FPM thing appears to be the main problem, but that still doesn't
explain the difference between the two 16MB DIMMS. According to chipmunk,
my 16Mitsu is 2meg x8, 2k refresh, and the 16Cubig (which also has Mitsu
chips) is 1 meg x 16, 1k refresh, but both are 16 megabit 60ns EDO. Hmmm.
