I got it running (sort of) on my PowerCenter 132, upgraded with a Sonnet
G3/400. Can't say I've noticed any significant improvement or app launch
speed increase, but that may be due to the nature of the install route I had
to take.
This is what worked for me. (Note: I don't advocate trying this, it's just
what worked on my machine. If you try it, I'm not responsible for any
problems)
1) Backed up all my important files and made sure I had a startup CD
2) I start my machine from a RAM disk.
3) I then use Gestlab <http://www.geocities.com/jp_curcio> to temporarily
change the Mach ID (Gestalt) of my machine. I chose to mimic a beige G3,
thinking that was closest in hardware config to my Mac
4) Did a clean install of 9.1.
5) Made a copy of the fresh 9.1 system suitcase and put it away safely.
6) Without restarting, I run the 9.2.1 updater.
7) Swapped the system suitcase for the 9.1 suitcase I had put away earlier.
8) Restarted my Mac
As you can see, I'm not completely running 9.2.1. Extensions, control
panels, coloursync, and the finder and other system files are new. But the
core suitcase is the same, so if that's where the speed enhancements lie, I
didn't get them.
It really isn't worth doing, except I love a challenge, and Apple's 'this
installer will not work on your hardware' was a pretty major one.
