Hi Judy,
I too have a PTP 225. I had intermittent and finally complete failure
of the CD-ROM that came with it. I got a very satisfactory
refurbished Plextor from TeamExcess
http://www.teamexcess.com/
for $52. That includes tax and shipping. I think it's a 40X or
something ridiculous like that! My main reasons for getting it were
its price and the fact that it is a Plextor. I've had a Plextor 8/20
writer for a couple of years and had no trouble with it.
I had a problem with Toast Titanium recognizing my CD drives. I had
been running CD Toolkit and its updates since I got this machine. But
I learned from the McGuru's site that CD-ROM Toolkit can be flakey at
times while CD/DVD SpeedTools tends to be more reliable, I got it
($39.95 I think) and Toast easily found my CD drives. I've had nary
a problem since.
I tend to distrust or at least not want to rely on hacks for things
this basic and necessary.
So, I guess my recommendation is to get SpeedTools first and see if
that fixes things. (Maybe even before that get a CD cleaner and clean
the old thing.) If neither of these does it then I suspect a failing
drive.

Notice: I have gone in search of myself. If I should show up before I
return, please keep an eye on me until I return. Thank youŠ
PS. I've also had good luck getting things I like for good prices
from OverStock.com. Got a great Nokia 21" for $365. I'd check them as
well for CD drives.
