After a long period of investigation (every night for a week), I found the culprit: bad RAM. Some RAM is just bad. This RAM worked well for the first 14 months I'd used it, then started going south. Once I replaced the errant chips (with RAM from Crucial.com - the only vendor from which I'll purchase RAM, BTW), the machine worked great!
