I would add that if the version of Drive Setup that comes 
with OS 8 (can't remember) might not be able to 
initialize (erase) a hard drive that's been formatted or 
initialized with something else, no matter how the 
computer is started up. But that's the goal here, as it 
sounds as if there's no software currently on the hard 
drive to be kept/retrieved.

If you can startup from the CD, I'd go straight to the 
Utilities folder and launch Drive Setup and initialize the 
hard drive. You should see a messege that says 
another disk utility has already been used, etc., but that 
the disk CAN STILL be initialized. Do it and then run the 
OS installer.

If it can't be initialized, try a newer version of Drive 
Setup (you'd then need to put that on a different startup 
dervice like an external hard drive etc.).
