Ahead of you (in the States at least!) with time zone difference, I
am back from a night of sleep and I got my mail. This is the beauty
of the user group.

Robert, Dennis, David, and Chuck, thank you for your input!

It is now working: you were right, it was another SCSI voodoo!
Actually I modified the unfamous TERMINATOR jumper: I took it out...
and then my computer restarted without a glitch and recognized the
CD-ROM right away.

What still puzzled me is this jumper configuration. In my YAMAHA
user's manual it states that if there is a jumper the terminator is
ON; if there is no jumper the terminator is OFF! (which is the case
now)... and in my system now the CD-ROM is the last device connected
to the internal SCSI-2 ruban cable with ID #3... what am I missing?

One last question is regarding the parity jumper: I understand it is
used for error corrections when moving data from the CD to the
system; do you keep it ON or OFF? does it slow down operation? your
experience?

Thank you again for your help all,
