I know that the original Mac 7200/75 and 7200/90 carried the warning to use
FPM memory only, but later derivations of the 'Catalyst' mobo merely
treated EDO memory as 1/2 strength. ie a 32MB dimm was recognized as a 16mb
dimm. If memory serves, so to speak, this was also true of the 6100 mobo
which used 72 pin simms.
So how do you tell if your memory is EDO or FPM?
eg. I bought a PowerTowerPro recently which had 6 x 64 mb dimms, 2 of which
turned out to be EDO and the rest FPM. I wanted to use the various sticks
in other computers, and so visited
http://www.chipmunk.nl/DRAM/ChipManufacturers.htm
to check the numbers found on the dimm IC's.
http://www.macgurus.com/graphics/mgpccramspecs.html "Clone Specs from Hell! "
shows all PowerComputing machines except the PowerBases as requiring FPM ram.
Elsewhere in the site they have a good explanation of the difference
between the two types of Ram.
Another good read on EDO ram is here
