I have struggled with this endlessly, but have gotten it to work on
quite a few installations.

As I recall, the PB180 (and other PowerBases) seems to refuse to boot
from the OS 8.6 CD without an error. Also, if you are able to get it
installed, the OS 8.6 itself returns all sorts of goofy errors upon startup.

The last few cases I had this problem on were resolved by 1) removing
the L2 cache entirely (not favorable tho) and 2) swapping out memory
chips (yes, you may need to buy new memory) until I found a combination
that worked.

In another case, we simply had a defective OS 8.6 CD.

Perhaps OS 8.6 is doing some more detailed memory checking or usage and
poops out in the PowerBase's logic board configuration.

If you are able to get one of the newer OS 8.6 PoCo CDs that had the
draggable System Folder, I would suggest trying that.

Also, remember to remove the Apple Photo Access extension as there is a
conflict that causes PC-formatted floppy disks to freeze the machine.
Another quirk specific to the PowerComputing machines.

Hope this helps.
