Software or hardware problem ?

Software...
Does the machine display this abherrant behaviour if rebooted from a cd
(this can be accomplished by setting the CD as the startup system via the
control panels>startup disk)

Hardware...
Did you zap pram (cmnd-opt-P-R) at *startup*. (Doing so at restart doesn't
fully clear the pram.)
