Ok, I'm back. Earlier in the month I reported that my PowerTower Pro doesn't re-boot. If I choose "Reboot" from the special menu, shutdown dialog, or even give the 3-finger-salute, the machine shuts down, chimes, spins up it's disks and makes the usual noises, but fails to turn on the display or get to the desktop. What's more, trying to hit Apple-Option-P-R during a reboot results in nothing happening. Zapping PRAM from a cold boot works fine and even lets the Mac cycle a few times and boot.
Michael S. Macdonald suggested I do the following: >>> Software or hardware problem ? Software... Does the machine display this abherrant behaviour if rebooted from a cd (this can be accomplished by setting the CD as the startup system via the control panels>startup disk) Hardware... Did you zap pram (cmnd-opt-P-R) at *startup*. (Doing so at restart doesn't fully clear the pram.) Cheers...Michael <<< Well, I tried all of that. But now I've got an additional problem. I can't boot off any disk but the Apple branded internal hard drive (pulled from a 6100) on the external SCSI bus (notably, I haven't tried a floppy, but I also don't have any bootable floppies and no blank ones to make one). Trying to cold boot from another device (CD by "c" key or by Startup Disk control panel, anything by Apple-Option-Shift-Delete, external HD by Startup Disk control panel, other internal HD by Startup Disk control panel) results in a chime, gray screen w/ pointer, then a stall. Not a crash (the pointer still moves and no sad mac), but no happy mac, nor a blinking floppy. Trying to warm-boot to a device other than that aforementioned disk causes the aforementioned strange warm-boot behaviour with the blank screen. One other thing: when I boot from the internal HD (the one that does work), I get to the desktop, I hear a sort of a "whoop" (like an atari would make) from the speaker. Then, when I depress a key on the keyboard, I get a single beep from the speaker. If I hold the key down, I get two beeps (about a 1/2-second apart), then the key functions. (So, typing the word "the" would go like this: "beep,,,beep" t "beep,,,beep" h "beep,,,beep" e) I have not installed ANY software since the machine worked last. Weird, huh? I tried different keyboard and cables, just to make sure. They don't seem to be the problem. Zapped the PRAM, hit the CUDA, etc. Good PRAM battery (tests 3.6V w/ voltmeter). At this point, I'm beginning to suspect my CUDA is toast. My setup: PowerTower Pro 200 w/ Daystar nPower400 (dual 200MHz 604e daystar upgrade card) no L2 Cache 152MB RAM, not interleaved SCSI:1.0 Apple 250 MB HD (2 partitions: OS 8 and System 7.5 <- boots OS 8). SCSI:1.6 LaCie branded 4x CD-R SCSI:1.2 Seagate Hawk external drive (BeOS R4.5 installed), terminated SCSI:0.0 Quantum Atlas II 9GB (3 partitions: OS 9 and two unallocated) SCSI:0.1 Apple CD 300i SCSI:0.3 Stock 16x CD-ROM, terminated IMS TwinTurbo 128M8 PCI card and AppleVision 1710 (working fine, no problems) Dayna E/PCI 10baseT ethernet PCI card TurboTV PCI card MiroMotion DC30 PCI card Stock PowerComputing Extended Keyboard and mouse.
