<snip> <in your situation, I might be tempted to start <completely fresh: back up everything, reformat the hard drive (as a <single HFS+ volume), thoroughly test the drive every which way, then <reinstall or restore what's needed. That may sound like a lot of <work. But unrepairable major errors make me nervous. <But first I'd give DiskWarrior a crack at it.
Zulu Kane, THANKS so much. I appreciate and value your comments. Makes good sense. I have been keeping the system and major software on the smaller HFS partition because my machine originally came with 7.5.1 and if I bring it up on the original CD I can't access anything on the HFS+ partition. I can however still get to the smaller HFS partition. Maybe I can build an 8.6 boot disk on CD. Then I wouldn't be locked into keeping the two separate partitions. I don't remember how, but I will try to find it in the archives. Thank You!
