I used a cd that was for an iMac. If I remember right, the installer sent up a box saying that if I continued I would destroy the cd and I said go on anyway. It was a fake message to make people buy the full install disc.
HFS+ is what the newer macs use for the hd format. The old one is hfs and it uses more space than hfs+ Mine and your PTP use hfs. The initializing is done from the utilities on the installer disk. Before installing, when you boot up with the cd disk, you can get at the utilities by clicking on the stuff up at the left on the screen.
Under utilities you would find something about initializing or formating. Of course everything will be removed from your hd. That is what changed my old driver to an Apple driver. Anything you need to save must be backed up somehow.
If you are free to initialize the hd, you can experiment. That's basically what I did.
