My workaround, which has coexisted simultaneously with a crash-free day, is
not to hide apps (brilliant, eh?)(the screen gets really messy, but I'm a
bachelor so it doesn't bother me) and to "sleep" the Sony monitor by
flicking its Input switch from 1 to unused 2. (The Sony G420 can be plugged
into 2 computers and switched back and forth.) For a couple minutes the Sony
says hey, I'm not connected. Then it goes to sleep. Flicking the switch
brings it back to life. Had 5 apps going at once all day. Left the computer
for large chunks of time. No crashes.

If you don't have an Input switch, can the monitor be safely turned off?
Note: that's a question; not a suggestion. If I get curious, I may tinker
with Good Enough - leaving the System at Never Sleep but changing the
internal hard drive to 15 minutes or some such.

Most likely, I'll find this setup pretty darn fortunate for my week of
waiting for Apple repairs. Viva (the ghost of) Power Computing!
