I talked too soon. The Giant Screen has come back. But as a Mini Giant. It
still is so big it goes off screen - but it is manageable.

This happens before the icons popup on the bottom of the screen so it my be
the video card as you suggest. It shows up on the profiler as a Aty mach
64_3D_pcc Model ATY GT-B vendor 1002.

Michael Mac suggested I get a G4 off ebay and quit worrying about it.

Why is it, you lust for a more powerful machine, with problems you don't
know about ... when the machine you have is perfectly adequate? And you are
fully aware of all it's problems and short comings.

I was about to think it was the old male thing, faster is better. But then
I see these gals, that keep getting married and divorced ... always
looking for the better deal ... when they are the lemon.

After the 30 crashes with Internet Exploder trying to utilize PayPal ... I
figured it was time to do a clean install just for safety's sake. IT has not
bothered me with the Giant desktop screen since. A clean install is such a
pain in the ass, I wouldn't have done it for the giant screen alone. BUT, it
did rid me of all the little freeware apps tried and discarded with the
little preference files and other vermin left behind.

My guess is that when this happens your video card is sending a signal to the
monitor with a combination resolution and refresh rate that the monitor
can't
handle properly.

Does it happen only after the little icons go across the bottom of the screen
on startup? If so, it probably is a software problem. But if it happens early
in the startup process, I'd guess it's a hardware problem -- most likely with
the video card.

Have you tried a different video card or monitor? Have you tried a different
startup volume with the same hardware?
