Unlike people, old HD's can some be snapped out of a comatose state by taking them out of the computer, holding them horizontally, giving them a coupla good sharp twists, and then reconnecting them.
Older drives can develope 'sticktion', wherein the tiny motor in the drive cannot spin the platter, and the twisting motion loosens up the axle.
If this gets the drive working (makes the '?' disappear), then the powercenter can be hooked up to the iMac with an ethernet cable (crossover version) and data transferred from drive to drive directly.
After giving this advice to a friend, he later told me how well it worked after he had taken the HD out, opened it up, and spun the platter with his finger...=)...true story!
