The problem is that it collides with the also very standard doubleclick to select a word, which the URL constitutes. Something one would like to do to copy or drag and drop the URL to elsewhere. I really think a Cmd-Click would be more standard, but I haven't really looked into it to be sure. One solution would be to make this a preference.
