Yes, trashed messages are also indexed. In fact, if you empty the trash
then perform a search, the messages that have been received and deleted
since the last search are also sorted and optimized... I'll try to
improve this in a future version!

There is definitely a problem here! It takes about 2 seconds for me to
sort and optimize 750 new messages in a 400 MB database, on a 667 MHz
powerbook.
Well, if you search for a very common word, and several thousands of
messages are found, it can also takes a few seconds to display the result
list (in my case, 5 seconds to display 80,000 found messages)

You can try to compact your index (from the file/database menu),
preferably after you have emptied the trash so deleted messages will be
removed from the index, but I think the problem is elsewhere... Maybe you
need to allocate more memory for PowerMail?
