My ethernet port died on my Powerbook a couple of weeks ago. It was a
slow death where the connection to the cable modem kept slowing down. It
got to the point where you are at, where the outgoing messages were not
getting sent. I had to force quit PM (in OS X) a couple of times, but
the message was still in the out tray. I think I switched the message
from "waiting" to "draft" and then re-sent the message when I got a
better connection.
