I certainly don't doubt that this problem is affecting the people who have written about it, but it has never once occurred to me in a year of intense PM usage. Why would an SMTP server timeout "frequently" as you mention? I've never had trouble like that with any of the SMTP servers I connect to. Again, no doubts, just a raised eyebrow.
