cron is a UNIX utility built into Mac OS X that allows you to schedule certain events. You can run UNIX shell scripts, AppleScripts, pretty much whatever you can do via terminal you can schedule using cron. The actual configuration file is called a crontab. If you open up terminal and type: man cron then press return, the unix man (manual) entry for cron is displayed. you can also do man crontab for the man page for crontab. Hope this helps.
