Well, My stepson who is _very_ computer literate lost lots of email when one of his IMAP clients went haywire and delted all the local mail. This propagated and suddenly he found every email client he used lost all of its mail too.
The last time I tried IMAP with Powermail, I found that you couldn't read mail unless you were connected to the internet--annoying on an airplane or BART, for sure. I find the easiest to be to "keep on server for 30 days"--this allows multiple computers to pull down the same email and have separate copies. The downside of my scheme is that there is no (easy) way to keep your Out Box synchronized, so you can't see what you sent from computer A when you are on B. Many people always cc. themselves for this reason. The other downside is that you need to train spam filters on each client, but that can be good because false positives on one won't be the same as on another. If you do implement IMAP, I would set up forwarders so that all the mail from various accounts all goes to the same place, which will make it easier to set up (just one IMAP account).
