I forgot to ask, are there any messages in the Console app when you this
problem occurs? Please chime in you others that have had the same
problem, with your observations.
I wish I could help out more, but as I don't know a way to reproduce it
on my system, I can only speculate.

Well, I would but I'm using legacy software that can't be used in a
production system after 10.4.8 without risking unwelcome halts in my
work, so that's why. I can live without the security updates for now.

Start PowerMail.
Select a message with "Content-Type: text/html" (in a view with a
preview pane).
Command-H > PowerMail refuses to hide its main windows.
No messages to the Console.
Quit and restart PowerMail.
Command-N make a new message.
Close it (don't have to type anything or save).
Select a message with "Content-Type: text/html" (in a view with a
preview pane).
Command-H > PowerMail hides like it should.
No messages here either.

Restart PowerMail and preview only messages that don't have an HTML part.
Hiding should be fine.
Select one message with an HTML part.
Hiding should now be borked.
This doesn't bork it for you?

FWIW, under Mac OS 10.5.3 (Intel), hiding behaviour works fine for me in
all three scenarios you described.

PowerMail in Tiger only has a problem hiding after I view a message with
HTML in it, even if the HTML viewer is off.
I found opening a window before selecting any HTML message grants an
immunity to PowerMail so that Command-H works. It lasts until I quit PM.
Why this is I have no idea! But it works.
If it doesn't work in Leopard, it could be another bug. I've not
experienced the "app hides and I can't get it back" problem.
I haven't had problems with other apps and hiding, so I assumed it was a
PowerMail bug. Maybe it has something to do with WebKit (because viewing
HTML messages seems to cause it, and I thought PM now incorporates it
for HTML display)... Do other apps with problems hiding utilize WebKit?

I get something like this happening (PowerMail 5.6.4 on OS X 10.4.11).
Once an HTML email has been displayed, PowerMail becomes unreliable at
hiding (it sometimes hides, or sometimes just gets sent behind another
application), and it also fails to display properly when you switch back
into it (you have to click on the icon in the Dock to get it to show its
windows).
I expect it's some kind of interaction with WebKit, which can cause
problems when it's used in Carbon applications.

I have the hiding issue and have HTML viewing turned off. I have chosen
to use the button at the bottom of the message to tun on the HTML or
view in a browser. Would webkit still be the causing the hiding issue
even when HTML viewing is off? I am using PowerMail 5.6.3 in Mac OS X 10.4.11.

Same here.

It seems like WebKit is involved in some way, because this happens
whenever an HTML message is displayed - even when HTML viewing is turned
off (as Chris Niemiec reported).
But this is just a guess on my part - it's up to CTM to find out why
things are going wrong and try to fix it.
