Subject:        Powernet: RP Training for Chemistry Technicians
Sent by:        [email protected]

We have our Chemistry Technicians complete ARW at our site so that they can perform self coverage for many of their activities.  They currently have several new hires and are challenging the time requirements for ARW training.  In order to help us determine how we compare to other plants, please respond to the following questions:

What “RP” activities do Chemistry Technicians perform at your site?  Specifically:

Do Chemistry Technicians provide self coverage for collecting samples from radioactive systems? Yes

Do Chemistry Technicians dose rate samples (e.g., RCS)?Yes

Do Chemistry Technicians transport radioactive material?Yes

If yes, what is the threshold dose rate above which they have to be escorted by RP? 80 mrem at 30cm

Do Chemistry Technicians perform some contamination surveys of their work areas? No

What initial radiological training is provided to Chemistry Technicians in addition to standard Radiation Worker Training (e.g., ARW?)? Rad practices specific to chemistry activities.

What continuing radiological training is provided to Chemistry Technicians in addition to standard Radiation Worker training requalification? Same as above once every 2 years

Thanks,
