Palo Verde provides the following response:

PVNGS does not currently have gamma sensitive monitors at the PA entrance;
however, doing so is part of our near term planning. The benefit of detecting
incoming personnel who have recently (and sometimes unknowingly) undergone a
nuclear medicine procedure or have licensed material from another station is
clearly a way to add rigor to your program. We had had sufficient site OE to
justify making such a change. This is especially important when individuals
have licensed material on them. Once they enter your PA and / or RCA and are
detected during the exit process you make it more difficult to differentiate
the original source of the activity.

Subject: Powernet: Protected Area Entrance Gamma Portal Monitors

I'm researching the usage of gamma portal monitors (e.g., PM-7, GEM-5, etc.) at
the entrance to the Protected Area. There is very specific guidance for having
the monitors at the exit to the protected area, but I cannot find anything for
the entrance - I've spoken with both ANI & INPO on the topic. At FCS, we
currently have them at both the entrance and exit to the protected area. Our
reasons lie with both local and industry OE as well as a strong desire that we
know about anything radioactive coming in the PA - from whatever source.

Question: Does your site have gamma portal monitors at the protected area
entrance & what is your reasoning?

Thanks,

David Brehm
