We currently do not require RP Techs to don gloves before responding to SAM alarms at the RCA boundary; however, we are evaluating implementing this practice. We would like to hear from other plants that have implemented this already.
Does your site require RP Techs to don gloves before responding to a SAM alarm? What type of Small Area Monitor does your site use? (SAM9, SAM11, CRONOS, etc.)? Based on layout of your RCA boundary, do personnel monitor in your Personal Contamination Monitors prior to placing personal items into a SAM to be monitored? Do you keep a RP Tech at RCA exit specifically for responding to alarms (Personal Contamination Monitors, SAMs, etc.)? Do you operate your SAMs in "Minimum Count Time" mode or have you increased count time to reduce false alarms? Do RPTs don gloves to respond to any SAM alarm or do they have a threshold (e.g., 10,000 dpm)? Thanks for your response!
