Thanks for this response. Very helpful. From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Monday, October 22, 2012 5:08 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Powernet: RE: RPTs Don Gloves Prior to Responding to SAM Alarm?
Palo Verde provides the following response: Yes, Palo Verde requires RP Techs to don gloves when responding to SAM alarms. This is done for all alarms without threshold. We use the SAM12 and our RCA egress area has you use the tool monitor first, if all items clear, then they go thru a Personal Contamination Monitor. Do you keep a RP Tech at RCA exit? Most of the time during on line periods, and all of the time during outages. If an individual alarms either a Personal Contamination Monitors or SAM and there is no RP present at the egress area, there is a plant radio there for their use so that they can contact RP. The individual must wait there until RP arrives. Do you operate your SAMs in "Minimum Count Time" mode or have you increased count time to reduce false alarms? Palo Verde sets the SAM12 with a maximum count time of 30 seconds (min count of 5 second); this allows the tool monitor to meet background and statistical requirements. ********************************************************************** Seth J. We currently do not require RP Techs to don gloves before responding to SAM alarms at the RCA boundary; however, we are evaluating implementing this practice. We would like to hear from other plants that have implemented this already. Does your site require RP Techs to don gloves before responding to a SAM alarm? What type of Small Area Monitor does your site use? (SAM9, SAM11, CRONOS, etc.)? Based on layout of your RCA boundary, do personnel monitor in your Personal Contamination Monitors prior to placing personal items into a SAM to be monitored? Do you keep a RP Tech at RCA exit specifically for responding to alarms (Personal Contamination Monitors, SAMs, etc.)? Do you operate your SAMs in "Minimum Count Time" mode or have you increased count time to reduce false alarms? Do RPTs don gloves to respond to any SAM alarm or do they have a threshold (e.g., 10,000 dpm)?
