Answers from San Onofre in blue:

Does your site require RP Techs to don gloves before responding to a SAM alarm?  Yes, latex gloves expected

What type of Small Area Monitor does your site use? (SAM9, SAM11, CRONOS, etc.)?  SAM 9's, SAM 11's, and a couple of SAM 12's.

Based on layout of your RCA boundary, do personnel monitor in your Personal Contamination Monitors prior to placing personal items into a SAM to be monitored?   No, workers monitor all personal items in SAM first (empty pockets policy) and then, after success, monitor themselves in WBCM.

Do you keep a RP Tech at RCA exit  specifically for responding to alarms (Personal Contamination Monitors, SAMs, etc.)?  Our Main Control Point is staffed 24/7 and the Techs are expected to respond to alarms.  Instructions on the SAM doors tell workers not to open the door if an alarm occurs but request HP assistance.

Do you operate your SAMs in “Minimum Count Time” mode or have you increased count time to reduce false alarms?  Set to meet LLD.

Do RPTs don gloves to respond to any SAM alarm or do they have a threshold (e.g., 10,000 dpm)?   No threshold.

We currently do not require  RP Techs to don gloves before responding to SAM alarms at the RCA boundary; however, we are evaluating implementing this practice.  We would like to hear from other plants that have implemented this already.
