Hi, Diablo Canyon does allow TLDs to be taken home, although we are evaluating changing that decision. We began allowing TLDs offsite in January 2014. Prior to that time and for most of 2014 we placed TLDs in the homes of people throughout the area. Based on that data we recognized that we have substantial variability in the natural background throughout the area. We carefully monitor out TLD/ED discrepancies in the low dose region to minimize our false positive/negative TLD data.
We use a calculated background rate comprised of both county data and out well established site background. It is for the above reason and a consistent low level rate of people sending their TLDs through the PA x-ray search train that are causing us to reevaluate the decision to allow TLDs to be taken home. Sequoyah currently makes six sets of ten dosimeters each that we send to six employee’s homes across our local region to monitor the background variation compared to the site’s background. We are considering discontinuing this practice, as we see very little variation. 1. Does your site do this or something similar? 2. If so, what is the driver for doing so?
