CAUTION - EXTERNAL EMAIL North Anna is benchmarking the industry on Count Room MCA calibration. 1. Do you calibrate your MCAs annually? No, we calibrate biennially. We perform daily response checks with a NIST traceable mixed gamma source. The responses are trended by the QA software. This does not apply to whole body counters! 2. What process do you use to calibrate your MCAs? For example ordering sources for each geometry or ordering a single source to verify no significant change in detector efficiencies? We use NIST traceable mixed gamma sources for the various geometries, with the source type (i.e. density, base material, etc.) and containers consistent with the material being counted and the site supplied containers. For example, we have soil mixed gamma standards for 500 ml and 1000 ml marinelli beakers for soil counting. 3. Do you install new calibration values after completing detector energy/efficiency calibrations or continue to use the old values if energy/efficiency values have not changed significantly? “As found” counts are performed with a new source, then a new calibration is performed generating new energy and efficiency calibrations. We do not perform verification then use prior calibrations. By the way, we use Ortec software and detectors in our count room (three HPGe detectors). Thank you in advance for you help! Barbara J.
