"We are ready to construct the railway awaiting support from the provincial administration as well as the central government," representative of SNCF International, Michel Antraigue, said after meeting Aceh provincial officials. "Rail-based transportation is very important for developing regions to anticipate road traffic congestion," he added. Antraigue said the French state-owned company was serious about developing railway infrastructure and networks in Indonesia. SNCF International is working on the 1,300-kilometer Beijing-Shanghai railway in China and the 1,600-kilometer connecting Jeddah, Mecca and Madina in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, head Aceh Transportation Agency Usman Budiman said the railway would cost some Rp 7.4 trillion and would be funded by the State Budget and Aceh Provincial Budget. "So far we have finished the preparation phase of the project," he said. "We expect the first phase form Besitang to Langsa will be operational in 2006," he said.
