Actually both are wrong, in my opinion the text should be Searching for factors of ... up to ... or Checking ... for factors up to ... The point being that factoring (or factorizing, which sounds wrong to me and which my English (UK) spell checker has just objected to!) would apply to a number which is already known to be composite. However I can see the point in keeping these status messages as short as possible, and there isn't really any ambiguity as a consequence of the existing text. Pedantry is a poor reason for fixing it.
