Phew! How many version numbers will it have to go through before it's
really sorted I wonder. Hope it's not as expensive to maintain as it's

Well it's 10.1.5, which is an update. I've got 10.2 on my iBook, but
haven't dared upgrade my desktop G4 yet.

10.2 is excellent, though.

Cheers

Dear Richard

My confusion over the numbering stems from some Mac people using X to denote
ten which I have now learnt it doesn't. Some just skip the 10 after the X and
call it one.

As I understand it OSX will have lots of updates through its life. This is
because it is essentially UNIX and UNIX has lots of updates. The basic
programme stays the same but small tweaks which might make one programme
perform marginally better will keep getting added. Whether there are charges
for all the updates is another matter.

OSX 10.2 onwards is theoretically able to suit all currently available and
future programmes for years to come. There is no suggestion that anything
after that denotes that earlier versions were Beta or incomplete. It might be
that a future programme will perform a function slightly better with a patch
on the OS. One reason why some printer drivers are slow in appearing in OSX
is because Epson & HP have realised there are many improvements that can be
made if they start again from the ground up.

One reason why there seem to have been a lot of updates in a short period is
that Apple used a video card which was not compatible with screen redraws on
Quark because Quark just haven't been keeping up with new developments. This
problem has now been solved with the latest OS version. The problem will also
go away because Quark are making very slow progress in bringing out a new
version which will have at least the features of Indesign2 and work fully on
OSX. Quark has even lost some features on OS 9.2 and haven't issued a patch.
Any copies of Quark sold after January will be a miracle.

However, unlike photographers who want the latest bells and whistles there
are some successful businesses out there still using Quark 3.2 on very old
versions of Mac OS and on very old machines.

Yours
