I have not used this at the distances you want but there are a number of firms advertising active USB extender cables such as http://www.homestead.co.uk/usb444.htm which claims to allow up to 80 feet or so from daisychained 5 metre extensions. I regularly use my gear on board a power boat from the 12volt supply via an inverter and have experienced no problems.
