I have long since wondered why the medium format industry has not produced a
4x4 camera to fit the available chip, and also why the photographic industry
does not agree on a standard chip size, such as 4x4, just like they agreed
on film sizes years ago.

The size could remain constant so that bodies and lenses could be developed
without fear of obsolescence, whilst improvements to the chip and software
could continue ad infinitum, again, just has occurred with film.

Also a square chip would avoid the need to turn the camera on its side and
compromise the ergonomics of the design. I still hate turning a 35mm camera
sideways even though most of my images are this way round.

Cheers,
John Hill
