Steve - 5mtrs. is the limit without boosters - which are either powered hubs or accelerator cables (never used latter so don't know but suppose they may not need power).
However, with cheap cables I had an unreliable 10mtr. extension to a printer via a hub and with quality cables there's rarely a problem but the printer does need a 'reset' about once a month by pulling the cable out & re-inserting it. Have you looked at Airport & similar to do the same job, maybe better, by radio?
