The better visual effect with these spcific images is produced with a single
pass, we found that numerous incremental applications to build the image up
gave a much softer effect than we wanted. The problem was solved, well
acceptably so, by applying 90% of the effect in one go and then another 10%
after which removed the banding visible on the first pass without overly
altering the effect required.
