Neil, are you saying that transparent areas in a PSD file always print as
white or do you mean something else?
In my experience, Photoshop does not lay down any ink in transparent areas
or areas with 255, 255, 255. I think Paul's theory is correct.

I think you mean misinformation or wrong information. Disinformation implies
that wrong information was given out deliberately to throw up a smoke
screen, wrong foot the enemy, prepare the grounds for conflict, to
assassinate someone's character in public, etc, etc and so forth.
I have been guilty of "misinformation" many times but that's because I know
it's impossible to love someone whose perfect so I liberally sprinkle my
posts with "wrong information." ;-)
