William C of this very fine list put me on to vuescan and it rocks.

Dunno about batch scanning as I don't have a slide feeder...but you can do
as much or as little as you like with it and it is far better than
Silverfast (what I remember of it). I switched from Silverfast to Nikon's
software as I felt it gave me more control over the image - pre-scanning,
but Vuescan is better still IMHO. Will drive nearly any scanner too - which
was good for me as Nikon stopped supporting my old  ls-1000 for MAC G4 and
vuescan has breathed new life into the old beast...and all for $40 - inc
every upgrade...

Eats a a lot of RAM though - that's the only bummer about it...
