Ian Goodrick writes,
<<With a Nikon NEF file the data is not changed when you convert to a tiff or
jpeg. You can return again and again to the file and process with different
settings. I would expect the Fuji file to operate in a similar way.
Also as the software improves for converting raw files the finished output
should improve. Bibble has certainly improved from the first version of the
software.
This is yet another good reason for shooting RAW.>>

Perhaps we're talking at cross purposes Ian: I know the RAW file data isn't changed upon conversion, but often I don't want to convert a RAW file at all except for purposes of exploring an image, seeing it large on-screen, investigating the possibilities for its manipulation. Rather, I want to submit a RAW file to an agency - but I was wondering whether a RAW file (Fuji .RAF in my case) could be manipulated in its RAW state, and re-saved as an 8-bit RAW file with alterations... And I take your point about unmodified RAW files being subject to modification in better ways, as new software arrives.
