You can do this very acceftively using Photoshop, or any ICC aware
application that lets you convert from CMYK to RGB during the Print Process.
Applications that spring to mind are Illustrator 9/10, Indesign 2, Photoshop
5/6/7. NOT Quark

If you use one of the above applications, the CMYK to RGB conversion is done
before the data gets as far as the printer driver.

I don't think(not 100%) this has anything to do with the consumer market.
Its to do with how printer drivers interact with the system. Even the Epson
10600 driver is RGB based. I wouldn't call that printer a consumer device.

If you images are already supplied in CMYK, then you want to print them as
supplied. If you are generating the work yourself and are using your printer
as the final device, then use a good RGB colour range such as Adobe RGB
(1998) as this will give you an optimum range of colour to work with.
