Dear Michael,
I think it's good advice when working for foreign clients directly from the
UK to always get money up-front and I would ask for either 50% or expenses,
whichever is the greater amount, it's rarely a problem.
I recently did a job where I asked for this and found to my surprise that
the client had paid the total cost of the job into my account before I had
even sent them the pictures. Result! What nice people.
With apologies to any foreign friends I was told this rule of thumb many
years ago by a photographer I used to work for.
"The Germans will pay in full and on time,
The French will make a fuss about the invoice and pay late and
The Italians will deny any knowledge of ever working with you in the first
place!"
Happy hunting,
Mark.
