You can create a centred image using OS X and the 1290. Select "any printer" rather than 1290 and then create a custom size. Just bear in mind that any Epson printer needs about .56cm border as a minimum, but at least it will be centred. Borderless printing is not yet possible as standard yet however. As an expensive solution you could print a custom size on an A3 sheet if you really need A4 images at any cost.
The real problem here is that Apple hasn't yet defined certain specifics for the twain, so Epson are still left with a beta and they evidently prefer to wait rather than producing patches although many of us would welcome a nasty hack if it got the job done I am sure. I have no problem printing in OS X for colours, but for certain options I still go back to OS 9. The problem of slowness in the preview is again related to some bugs in OS X that need to be ironed out. Personally I'm fed up with the amount of time it takes to spool a document in OS X compared to OS 9. Moving from 10 seconds to 1 minute for the same file is just crazy and I find that unless I flatten a layered file in OS X before printing, I might even be waiting 30 minutes before I see an A3 image at 1440dpi.
